Sulkhan Saba Orbeliani [სულხან საბა ორბელიანი] (1658-1725), first Georgian encyclopediaist, who have issued first "Georgian Vocabulary" [„სიტყვის კონა“] defines "Nagazi" as a "Noble" pure-breeded [Georgian: გვარიანი, ჯიშიანი], big, strong, brave dog. In Georgia main breeders of Caucasian Ovcharka-Nagazi - Tush and Kakhetian shepherds newer needed special name for their dogs - dog for them always and exceptionally was Nagazi. There were only two kinds of dogs - Nagazis and "Bashkias". "Bashkia" is equivalent of non-breed, out-of-breed, mixed breed dog [Georgian: ბაშკია, უჯიშო].

Documental film "Tushetian Shepherd" is about life of Georgian shepherds living in the region of Tusheti and theirs seasonal migration from camps on the winter pastures in the North Caucasian plain "Kizlyar" (not far from Caspian Sea) via Great Caucasus Mountains to mountioeous summer pastures - to their native Tusheti. There are only natural shepherds in this film - human and dog - no artists. You can see here working conditions of Natural Nagazi - Caucasian Ovcharka. (1960ies).

In my grandfathers pack - pack alpha and some most strongest dogs were granted special iron collar and were upgraded to the rank of Volkodavs (Wolfhound, მახრჩობელა). We had some 4-5 such a collars in our house done by local smith. So, do you remember... Old times Caucasian Ovcharkas were armored dogs - as well as theirs owner-shepherds. Technology was used ageinst beasts...
